How I Rate Stuff

When it comes to rating things, I feel like there is a lot of ambiguity. I personally find rating systems often give people too much leeway and don't actually give any useful information. For all of my media, I will be using a 5 star system with no half stars, and defining it as such;

★★★★★

A five star is something that has had a significant impact on me, something I consider to stand out above all its' peers. These pieces of media may be masterpieces or they may be a personal favorite for one reason or another but they will probably stay with me forever.

★★★★☆

Four stars is an exceptional experience, typically something that stands strongly on its' own and doesn't need much improvement. Sometimes the thing holding these back from a five is personal taste.

★★★☆☆

Three stars is a good experience; it may have some flaws but is still enjoyable and worth exploring. Most "so bad it's good" movies end up here for me.

★★☆☆☆

Two stars is saved for stuff that might be disappointing, soulless, or just bad for one reason or another. This is something I find truly mediocre, but probably inoffensive.

★☆☆☆☆

One stars is saved for those pieces of media that are properly deficient; things that push past mediocre to being upsettingly bad.

☆☆☆☆☆

Zero stars is saved for media that I feel does meaningful harm; a piece of media that whether intentionally or unintentionally spreads hateful ideals, hate speech, or in some other material way crosses a line past being just a bad piece of media. I doubt I will put anything like that on this site in the first place.

Unrated

I just haven't rated this yet- maybe I need to revisit it, or maybe I haven't even engaged with it yet!
